The C8 Z06 is a whole new car

Knock knock. Who’s there? Not a Subaru EJ engine, but Chevrolet’s brand new Corvette. Chevy officially revealed the brand new C8 Z06 on October 26th, 2021.

GM loves to stay true to the quote “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Well this time they fixed it. The new Z06 is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 car ever produced for the public. With a brand new 5.5 litre flat plane crank engine found in the C8.R which debuted at Daytona, it seems to sound a bit ‘exotic’. Revving to near 9000 rpm, it produces 670 hp and 470 ft lbs. of torque.

The Z06 will feature trims similar to the base C8. Such as the 1lt, 2lt and so on. But the Z06 will undoubtedly feature the track oriented ‘Z07 Package’. This package has been around for some time, but the C8 has taken it a step further. The Z06 will come equipped with carbon fiber. And lots of it, including a front splitter, wheels and wing. To stop the Z06 it comes with Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with the front rotors being a 15.7 inch diameter and 15.4 inches at the rear.

With great power comes great numbers. With 670 hp, the Z06 clears the 0-60 time at an incredible 2.6 seconds. It also clears the quarter mile time at 10.6 seconds. The Dodge Demon does it in 9.9 seconds. Very comparable number since the Demon is a car specifically designed for the drag strip. The Z06 also clocks in at a sub 7 minute unofficial time at the Nurburgring, known for its unforgiving turns and conditions.

What’s next for the Corvette? In the past Chevy has unveiled the ZR1 trim for nearly every past generation. This trim has been considered the ‘ultimate’ Corvette. Most notably the most ‘powerful’ Corvette for each generation. The C8 is most likely getting this trim. Rumored to have a twin turbo setup. It most likely will make at least 900 horsepower. Expected to be a 2023 model, the Z06 will have to make do for us for now.
