Toyota’s GR Supra, does it live up to the hype?

For many, the Supra name is synonymous with its A80 generation. But the A90 Supra, it’s not so loved by its loyal fanbase. Toyota’s collaboration with BMW has come with backlash with its first announcement with the German carmaker. But I believe the new Supra is overhated, and we wouldn’t have it if it wasn’t for BMW.

The Chassis and Powerplant
The A90 Supra is based on the BMW Z4. Which means they share the same engine, which is the B58. An inline 6 engine with a single twin scroll turbocharger making 381 Horsepower for the 2021 model year. The engine is from BMW, but it has been proven to be a reliable power plant. With 0-60 times just shy of 4 seconds, it indeed is swift. A lot of owners have taken advantage of the tunability of the B58, with just simple bolt on parts boosting the power to over 400 wheel horsepower. I would expect the B58 to age nicely as time passes.

The Interior
The interior is quite definitely BMW-esque. From the touchscreen infotainment system, to the center console taken straight from a BMW. But Toyota did add some originality pertaining to the gauge cluster, which is only unique to the Supra.
But let’s be honest here. Toyota isn’t really known for its “luxury” interiors. Mostly just bland simple designs that wouldn’t catch the eye. BMW on the other hand is known for its luxury interiors. I really enjoy the interior and the touches that Toyota added. It would be comfortable for anyone to drive and enjoy.

The Conclusion
With some time, most enthusiasts will warm up to the A90 Supra. With potential of even becoming a ‘classic’ in the future. The BMW Toyota collaboration has gone well for the 2 companies. I believe that this is the best Supra generation that Toyota has given us gear heads. Even with a manual transmission in the near future. Let’s just hope that the Supra name will live on.
