This school year, students and teachers have worked to start an active Gay Straight Alliance Club at our school. This club provides a safe space for students and allows participating in fun activities and making new friends.
“Our mission is to promote support and improve the school environment for students who identify as LGBTQIA+, as well as students who are questioning their identity, have LGBTQIA friends, family members, or just care about LGBT+ issues,” Lisa Guzman, the teacher who organized the club said. “We want to provide a safe, supportive space where our students and allies can be themselves.”
Anna Rowley, a 12th grader in GSA said that the club is important because it helps students “know they are not alone with their experiences.” Rowley also said the club is a great learning experience for everyone. Although the club has only met a few times so far, the students have already had the opportunity to make friendship bracelets, and are planning a book club for the near future.
