Big Hit Basketball
Extra motivated by last year’s story, the Bruins will work hard to snag the championship this year. The Mountain View girls basketball team, under the leadership of Coach Dickerson, performed fantastically in the playoffs last year. They struggled in the preseason, but the girls didn’t let that discourage them. They pushed through and had great success in the regular season, and ended it with a record of 11-12. When asked about their success, Coach Dickerson said, “They began to trust each other and in the process…if five players were on the same page with each other it worked.” The Bruins started the playoffs as the 18th seed, but slowly and surely worked their way through the bracket. The Bruins ended up losing to Highland in the semifinals, but Coach Dickerson was proud of her girls anyway. “I was so excited,” she said. “Especially since we started with 1-7, and we improved and peaked at the right time. The building blocks that we had talked about paid off.”
The Bruins’ success last year motivated the coaching staff to continue to push the girls in the off-season. Coach Dickerson sent the team workouts and tips to improve during the quarantine, and began to hold open gyms to start getting players ready. “I want to work on individual skills so kids have confidence in themselves,” Coach Dickerson stated. “If they are confident now, when the season starts we can hone in on skills as a team.” The open gyms have been going well, but the team struggles to get more than 10 people on average to come.
With tryouts for the girls basketball drawing nearer, the team is asking for any and all girls who want to try out to do so. When asked what she would say to girls who are on the fence about trying out, Coach Dickerson responded with an enthusiastic, “Do it. If you make it on the team, great…you would have no way of knowing if you would make it if you don’t try. There’s no reason not to try out.” Josie Jorgensen, a senior and member of the team last year, also had something to say in regards to tryouts: “Definitely try out. It’s such a fun thing and you won’t regret it.”
Tryouts for the team begin in early November, so don’t wait to get ready to lead our Bruins to victory!
