Mountain View High School students are getting a dose of fun and creativity every Thursday at lunchtime, thanks to improv sessions held in the drama room. Led by senior drama students, these weekly gatherings invite students of all experience levels to step outside their comfort zones and try their hand at improvisation.
A popular game played during the sessions is “Freeze,” where two performers begin a scene, and at any point, another student can call out “Freeze!” and step in to replace one of the actors, taking the scene in a new, unexpected direction.
Another crowd favorite is “The Dating Game,” a comedic twist on the classic game show format. One student plays the “bachelor” or “bachelorette” while three others take on quirky, often outlandish characters. The bachelor or bachelorette asks questions to guess the identities of the characters, leading to lots of unpredictable and humorous moments.
Sami Albaloul, a junior at MVHS said “Improv is a fantastic experience, largely due to the supportive hosts and community. What I love most is the freedom it offers—you can step on stage and truly express yourself however you want.”
Junior Kaiden Hurd said,“I find improv exciting because it allows us to have fun and perform without the pressure of memorizing lines. While it’s still theater, it offers a unique freedom that enhances the experience. Improv also provides a great way to bond with people we already know and connect with new faces. Many people are drawn to improv for this fun, freeing environment, which encourages emotional vulnerability without judgment. Ultimately, it serves as a refreshing break from the routine of the school week.”
The Thursday lunchtime improv sessions have quickly become a favorite for students looking to have fun and get creative during their break in room 170.
